Interests: I’m interested in agri-food systems in Latin America, particularly from the perspectives of science & technology and development professionals. I am especially motivated by projects that are designed to facilitate social change and otherwise make research meaningful outside of the academy.

Annika Hugosson

Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC

Program: Anthropology

Interests: With a specialization in sociocultural anthropology, Annika is an animal studies scholar interested in relationships between humans and other animals in the multispecies commons. She holds a master’s degree in Anthrozoology from Canisius College.

Sierra Roark

Program: Anthropology; specialization in archaeology

Interests: I’m interested in uncovering past relationships between people, the environment, and material culture. I use archaeology and ethnohistory to explore colonialism, identity, health, and the creation of landscapes.

Interests: Food systems, food movements, migrant farmworkers, small farmers, agroecology, impacts of climate change on food systems

Kristen Viera

Interests: I recently received an M.S. in Ecology from UNC-CH’s Environment, Ecology, and Energy Program (E3P) and am pursuing a PhD in Ecology. My research explores organizational communication and learning about climate justice and water quality. I am interested in research projects that further communities’ and organizations’ efforts toward environmental and social justice.

Interests: I am interested in human-environment relations alongside the disproportionality of environmental hazards towards certain groups and how social structures may be incorporated into this environmental justice issue.

Sehdia Mansaray

Program: Socio-cultural Anthropology

Interests: I am interested in the role of environmental discourse in shaping sustainable development initiatives, particularly in agro-ecosystems of West Africa. My current research takes place with women mollusk harvesters in Senegal’s Sine-Saloum Delta.

Interests: I am interested in quantitative approaches to environmental and financial risk, particularly in understanding how data-driven models can inform resilience. I also enjoy exploring connections between climate, markets, and adaptation strategies.

Interests: Studying various environmental factors that impact food & nutrition as well as sustainable food systems, especially for rural low-income communities.

Interests:  As an aspiring advocate for public health, I am interested in biomedicine, determinants of health and disease, and human-environment relationships. I am especially excited about any projects that work to mitigate risks associated with environmental hazards and eradicate health disparities. 

Amina Abdul-Mutakallim

Major: Biology and Medical Anthropology

Interests: I am interested in health disparities, reproductive health, bridging gaps in healthcare, food deserts, and nutrition. I hope to explore the relationship between access to healthy foods and access to quality healthcare, as well as what impact diet can have on reproductive health.
